An abstract translation of the bilateral symmetries of the Western Leaf-footed Bug and its wing sets.

Throughout a semester of phases, the symmetries and behaviors of the Western Leaf-footed Bug were studied. A bilaterally symmetrical outer shell and wing set was discovered that shields a pair of fully membranous wings. The pattern on the outer set(only found printed on this Louisiana native species) was explored through trials of abstracting flat geometries. Moving into the three-dimensional, the pattern was translated into perforations on the base of the light sculpture. The overlapping resting position of the wings was translated to convey stark shadows.

As the sculpture moves from one material to another, more light is emitted until it reaches a surface.

After becoming familiar with the Leptoglossus Zonatus in the 2D, the three-dimensional world began to be explored through Kirigami paper folding.
